Panathinaiko Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium or Kallimarmaro

The Panathenaic StadiumAcross from the Zappion is located the Panathenaic Stadium or Kalimarmaro, in which the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. The stadium is of great historical importance because in the ancient times it was used for the Panathinaia celebrations, which were performed in honor of the goddess Athena. During the Middle Ages the Panathenaic Stadium was stripped completely from its marbles. In 1895 most of the marbles returned into place and the stadium was restored for the 1896 Olympic Games of Athens. Most of the reinstating was performed with the financial assistance of the national benefactor Georgios Averof, the final work of restoration was completed in 1900. Today, instead of charcoal powder track a plastic mat in black color has been placed to remind visitors the old days.
