Ancient Thira

Situated between the highest mountain of Santorini  Prophet Elias (Profitis Hlias)  and the rocky land of  Mesa Vouno overlooking the Aegean Sea 369 m up the coast,  the remains of the Dorian Ancient Thira town are still visible. After the great eruption the first settlers in the 9th Century BC are the Spartans, they selected this position as the ideal spot because of the strategic location whilst the area is a natural stronghold fort. In the 4th Century BC Ancient Thira was naval and military base colonized by the Ancient Egyptian Ptolemies.  Most of the remains today date from that period: Road paths, stone buildings, temples, churches, cemetery, market place, theater, graffiti drawings and valuable pieces of pottery and sculpture.
